What features make a hair straightener considered to be "the best"?
A common misconception is that 'ceramic hair straighteners' should have 'solid ceramic plates', but this is not the case. The BEST hair straighteners almost always have 'ceramic heating elements' in combination with aluminium plates, that are then coated in a composite of either ceramic or tourmaline and in VENUS/DIOSA's case, also nano-silver. In fact, solid ceramic plates are generally not that good at all! (For more information, see the FAQ "Aluminium Coated Plates or 'Ceramic' Plates?").
Ceramic Heating Elements or PTC Heaters?
When the original ghd ceramic hair straightener was released several years ago, the main reason people found it much better than all the other models available at that time, was that the ghd straightener used ceramic elements to heat an aluminium plate. But a lot of the cheaper straighteners - both then and now - still use the inferior PTC heaters and not ceramic heaters. PTC heaters are not able to produce the high negative ion output of a ceramic heater or heat as quickly. Ceramic elements also maintain an exact temperature much more easily and ceramic elements are more reliable. VENUS and DIOSA hair straighteners have the much better ceramic heating elements fitted.
Aluminium Coated Plates or 'Ceramic' Plates?
The hair straighteners generally regarded as the best on the market, use aluminium coated plates in combination with ceramic heating elements. The aluminium heats up extremely fast and disperses the heat evenly and this avoids any hot-spots that could damage your hair. Solid ceramic plates might sound like a good idea but are absolutely not! Ceramic plates are relatively slow to change temperature (creating hot-spots), plus they are extremely fragile and prone to damage. VENUS and DIOSA hair straighteners have the best combination of ceramic heaters and aluminium plates. The coating is then enhanced with both tourmaline and nano-silver for a high ionic output, far-infrared heat and gives healthy condition and shine.
What are the benefits of Tourmaline?
Crushed tourmaline crystals are added to the coating of the plates on VENUS and DIOSA hair irons. Tourmaline is a gemstone that when heated radiates the highest natural emission of negative ions and imparts infrared heat giving the shiniest, silkiest finish possible. It does this by helping to break down water molecules and locking condition into the hair, closing the hairs outer cuticle. It also heats more gently with far-infrared heat that works from inside the hair shaft, cutting down styling time dramatically.
What is Nano-Silver?
Nano technology is revolutionising the health and beauty world. Scientists have known about silver's anti-bacterial properties for thousands of years (the Romans and Greeks even used to put Silver coins in drinking water to keep it safe). And now the nano-silver added to the plates of VENUS and DIOSA hair straighteners and also the VENUS nano-silver brush range, removes 99.9% of all micro-organisms on contact, thus improving hair and scalp condition and general cleanliness. As an added bonus, the nano-silver creates an invisible film on the plates of the straighteners when heated which make them ultra-smooth, gliding effortlessly through hair without any pulling or snagging.
Do I need Variable Temperature Control?
Yes you do! And with VENUS and DIOSA irons you have a microprocessor controlled temperature adjustment between 80°C and 210°C (230°C on the VENUS PS072U). Variable temperature has several benefits. Firstly, not all hair types are best styled at the maximum temperature of 210° or higher - which is extremely hot! The maximum temperature is great if you have thick, course or naturally resilient hair in good condition. But for fine hair, perhaps bleached, chemically treated or fragile, just try dropping the temperature down to about 160° or less and with all those negative ions flying about, you'll still get perfect results! For normal hair in good condition around 190° is recommended, particularly if you use your straighteners most days of the week. The second good reason for having a variable temperature control is that it gives you much more freedom when styling. For example poker straight fringes don't always look so 'natural'. But lower the temperature to about 150° and you'll get a fringe that is straight but still has lovely volume to it. If you think about it, fixed temperature Irons cannot possibly be suitable for all hair types, and most are set at the higher temperatures which can do the most damage if used on delicate hair.
What are negative ions and far-infrared heat?
Negative ions are the result of negatively charged oxygen and fine water particles in natural air being combined together. Negative ions attach to positively charged hair removing static, frizz and flyaway's and help seal and close the hairs cuticle locking in moisture to help retain condition, shine and a natural healthy balance. Far-infrared heat, produced from the use of tourmaline and ceramic, heats from within the hair shaft, which causes much less chance of damaging the outer cuticle. Infrared heat also dries more quickly and just like negative ions, helps to close the hairs cuticle and lock in a beautiful shine and condition.
How wide are the VENUS and DIOSA Hair Stylers plates?
Both the DIOSA PH078 and VENUS PS072 hair stylers have the same nano-silver, ceramic and tourmaline plates that are 9cm long by 2.5cm wide. They are a 'floating plate' design, which means they clamp the hair evenly and easily. The plates are ultra-smooth and glide through the hair with no pulling or snagging.
What electrical voltage are VENUS and DIOSA products?
VENUS hair straighteners incorporate automatic voltage switching and can be used anywhere in the world from 100 volts up to 240 volts. DIOSA hair straighteners are designed for use on the UK, European and Australian 220/240 volt electrical supplies.
Both VENUS and DIOSA straighteners are fitted with a UK and European plug, or an Australian and European plug, or an American and European plug, depending on your delivery address.
Is there a difference between the VENUS and DIOSA brands?
VENUS is simply the new brand name for the products previously known as DIOSA. The company remains Diosa Limited, but going forward our products will be branded as VENUS. The two remaining DIOSA hair straighteners are still fantastic irons, but the newer VENUS straighteners incorporate multi-voltage, auto-shut-off and a superb new design. Plus we're confident that with the technology we've manufactured into the brand new VENUS nano-silver brush range, these brushes are simply the best radial heat brushes you can buy anywhere in the world.
